Improving Nutritional Intake at HaitiChildren Village Orphanage in Williamson, Haiti
Light a Single Candle partnered with Food for the Poor to fund The HaitiChildren Village Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Project developed animal husbandry micro-enterprises in order to promote food security, reduce feeding expenses, and to generate income for the orphanage. In addition to chicken coops, layers, broilers and all the needed equipment, a goat enclosure was built and goats were provided, as well as 6 cows and 1 bull. An apiculture component was also provided, with 6 beehives and all the necessary equipment and training. The children joined in and helped to plant Moringa trees. Engaging the children in these programs teaches them an appreciation for growing their own food, as well as building life and leadership skills.
