25 desperately poor Guatemalan families received training and tools to set up and maintain a vegetable garden with the funding of the Vegetable Gardens of El Caminero – Totonicapan, Guatemala,
The development team of Food For The Poor, Inc. completed this project in May of 2014. Together with the Social Helps Committee of the Lutheran Church of Guatemala, they completed an agricultural initiative to provide desperately poor Guatemalan families with a more nutritious diet and the means to earn an income.
From scavenging the local landfills for food scraps to farming vegetables, 25 families received training and farming tools to set up and maintain an irrigation system to plant and harvest lima beans, cauliflower, radishes, and cabbage. The results yielded a critical food source, new income, experience in agricultural techniques, and enough proceeds to reinvest in new seeds! In the long term, these vegetables provide iron and vitamin A, essential to forming an immune system to combat survivable diseases!
