LASC is pleased to have the privilege of continuing our partnership with Cross International. In 2022, we worked with Cross International on fifteen projects in Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua.
Community Transformation:
Agros: Nueva San Jose Community Transformation Project – This funding supported 30 families within an ongoing Community Transformation project in Nicaragua. The project provides agricultural diversification, increased asset building, market linkages, and increased farmer income. Within 2022, this program was able to assist 83% of families to increase the number of weeks of agricultural production, as well as diversify their production skills.
Agros: La Bendicion Baseline and Feasibility Study – This supported the completion of 285 household surveys, the development of an agribusiness assessment and designing of a healthcare clinic for 6 villages surrounding the La Bendicion department in Nicaragua.
Agros: La Bendicion HHC: Agribusiness Incubator for Community Transformation, Phase 1 – This is the 1st phase of the Community Transformation project in La Bendicion, Nicaragua following the feasibility analysis and baseline collection. The 1st phase was 18 months long and included training and selection of 136 families, the improvement of 3 water systems, the establishment of savings and loans groups, and upgrades to the health center. Within this project, Agros aims to triple the average household income within 5 years from $1.53 per person per day to $4.60.
Hope of Life: La Jigua Pre Community Transformation Project – This funding supported the pre-community transformation implementation activities conducted in the village of La Jigua, Guatemala. This project included a baseline survey, testing of water and farming soil, leadership development training, and the completion of a small community project.
Hope of Life: Los Vasquez Community Transformation Year 1 – This support is for the first of three years of a Community Transformation project implementation in the village of Los Vazquez, Guatemala. This three-year implementing project will impact families in Los Vasquez by providing access to potable water through point-of-use water filters, improving housing, improving health by providing sanitary latrines and reducing the number of children diagnosed with malnutrition, improving community capacity through training and application of best practices, increasing household income and diversifying income through creation of new revenue streams.
Hope of Life: Pre-Community Transformation Implementation in Los Ramirez – This support is for the pre-Community Transformation implementation activities for that were conducted in the village of Los Ramirez, Guatemala over a 5-month timeline by the Hope of Life staff. This project included leadership development trainings, the completion of a baseline survey and the completion of a small community project led by the COCODE leaders of the community.
Hope of Life: El Milagro Community Transformation Year 2 – This is the 2nd year of a Community Transformation project in El Milagro, Guatemala focused on providing access to potable water, improving housing, improving health and community capacity, and increasing household income and diversifying income through creation of revenue streams to 121 families. Within 2022, 100% of the 76 coffee households were able to achieve an average daily income of $2.64, and 100% of the 10 chicken coop households were able to achieve an average daily income of $3.57.
World Concern: Phase 2: Pre-Community Transformation Implementation in Tapio and Mononville – This funding supported the next phase of Community Transformation that focused on implementation of leadership trainings, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene trainings and the development of Farmers Associations and Savings Groups in 2 villages in Haiti.
Other Relief & Recovery Projects:
Alfalit: Haiti Literacy Program – This funding provided access to education to 1,700 women and youth in Haiti. Students from the Western department of Haiti’s capital city participated in a six-month Basic Literacy Program with additional lessons in health. Students will graduate from this program with a third-grade education in reading, writing, arithmetic and reading comprehension.
Alfalit: Empowering Adults Through Literacy 2023 – This program provides Basic Literacy courses to 1000 adults in the Dominican Republic to help them reach 3rd grade literacy level.
Casa Bernabe: Pathways to the Future Year 2 – This program provides education, stability, shelter, and psychosocial support for 45-55 youth who will age out of their orphanage at 18 years old with the goal of transitioning them to an economically sustainable life.
Casa de Vida: Improving the Environment, Educational Program and Staff – This supported allowed a shelter home in Guatemala to provide training/developmental support for the staff, food for the 25 families who stay in the shelter and the 3 staff members, as well as the purchase of a new computer for both staff and resident use.
FEH (Fondation Des Enfants d Haiti): C-Tech Nursing Program Expansion – This supported the construction of an expanded housing facility, 2 classrooms and a clinic, as well as supported 4 scholarships for nursing students and the support of health clinics in the community where the students complete their internships in Haiti.
MEBSH Literacy Centers: Education Program Construction and Social Work – This funding supported 14 literacy centers and their operations which serve restavek children across Haiti, helping to provide education and a feeding program for 490 students and 50 staff.
MEEBA: Skills for a Future Year 2 – This funding provided a second year of support to the Children’s Club of Solino in Haiti through the feeding program for 650 youth, continued expansion of their computer lab, and computer literacy training for 60 youth and 10 young adults.
